Thiruvananthapuram Zoo and Museum is one of the oldest functioning of its kind in India. It has already completed more than 150 years of existance. Originally in the Museum only few Bronzes from the collections of the Maharaja of Travancore and Botanical specimens were exhibited. In order to educate through Museum to the common public, it was necessary at that time to have some more attractions in and around the Museum and thus a Public garden and Zoological park started sometime during 1857. However, in due course of time, the Zoological park and the public garden became the main centre of attraction than the Museum. The Napier Museum Building, one of the earliest Museum Buildings designed for this purpose remained as a sole attraction. Its high ceiling, double walls for safety and ventilation, flow of natural air and light, front majestic elevation matching the native architecture, all attracted the Engineers and Art Lovers.
